Lewis upsets Pepperdine, meets BYU in title match

LONG BEACH, Calif. Brigham Young and Lewis University advanced to the NCAA men's volleyball championship after semifinal victories last night.

The top-seeded Cougars reached their third final in five years by beating fourth-seeded Penn State, 36-34, 30-25, 28-30, 30-26, at Long Beach State.
Lewis scored the final four points of its match against second-seeded Pepperdine to earn a 30-27, 29-31, 30-17, 25-30, 15-13 victory in the first semifinal.
BYU and Lewis will play tomorrow for the title.
Jonathan Alleman led BYU (23-6) with 17 kills and 10 digs. Carlos Guerra finished with a match-high 19 kills for Penn State (26-6).
Gustavo Meyer led Lewis (28-5) with 24 kills, five block assists and 14 digs. Fred Winters had 28 kills, Sean Rooney added 21 kills, and setter John Mayer had 60 assists and 12 digs for Pepperdine (24-6).
The victory makes Lewis the first Division II entrant to play for an NCAA men's volleyball championship. Lewis also set school single-match records for kills (85), attempts (179), assists (82) and digs (71).
