Kahuku water polo girls clinch OIA regular season

Advertiser Staff

The Kahuku High girls water polo team clinched the O'ahu Interscholastic Association regular-season championship yesterday with a pair of victories at the Brigham Young University-Hawai'i pool.

The Red Raiders defeated Kalani, 12-1, and beat 'Aiea, 17-3, to improve their record to 9-0 in the first season of OIA competition.

"It feels great to see the team progress as they have since the beginning of the season," said Paul Brewer, who coaches the Red Raiders along with Aukai Ferguson. "Their passing, the set offense, the set defense ... have all improved."

Brewer credited team captains Trudianne Huish and Keala Whitford for providing valuable leadership.

"They played instrumental roles in leading the team ... helping the team progress," Brewer said.

Huish was strong in goal yesterday.

"She's progressed from blocking a few shots to a lot of shots in every game," Brewer said.

Whitford, according to Brewer, "did really well throughout the season." She scored four goals in the win over Kalani.
