UH second in triathlon event

A team from the University of Hawai'i finished second in the men's division of last Saturday's USA Triathlon Association's collegiate national championships in Peoria, Ariz.

Triathlon is not an official NCAA sport at UH and members of the club team paid their own expenses.

UH's James Cotter finished third overall in 2 hours, 1 minute, 6 seconds in competition that included a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run. Navy's Timothy O'Donnell won in 1:58:00.

Forty-five schools participated with 187 female competitors and 311 males competitors vying for individual and team honors.

Navy took the men's team championship for the second straight year. Colorado won the women's title.

CLINIC

• Got a need for speed? Aspiring athletes interested in learning conditioning tips are invited to participate in this weekend's Hawai'i Speed & Quickness Clinic at the University of Hawai'i's Cooke Field.

UH assistant football coach Rich Miano, UH conditioning coach Mel deLaura and several former Warrior football players and Rainbow Wahine volleyball players will be instructors.

Each session is $10, and two-hour sessions are scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday. Ages 8-12 work out from 10 a.m.-noon; ages 13 and older work out from 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Participants are required to wear appropriate tennis shoes. Cleats are not permitted. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

BOXING

• Guillermo ranked No. 1: Wai'anae boxer Samson Guillermo is ranked No. 1 in the 119-pound division of the USA-Boxing national rankings for the first quarter of the year.

Guillermo, a 20-year-old junior at Northern Michigan, recently won the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships and the U.S. Challenge, which earned him a spot in the U.S. Olympic team trials.

Guillermo fights out of the Evolution Pearl City Boxing Club.

Dat Nguyen of the Wailuku (Maui) Boxing Club is ranked No. 3 in the 125-pound division.

Another Evolution boxer, Deustch Puu of Salt Lake, is ranked No. 6 in the 201-plus division.

USA-Boxing is the national governing body of amateur boxing in the United States.
