Actress Kelly Hu to appear at UH with others from 'X2'

Suddenly, but not exactly unexpectedly, Kamehameha Schools grad Kelly Hu is popping up all over.

Hu, who has a plum role as the adamantium-clawed Lady Deathstrike in "X2: X-Men United," which opened nationwide yesterday, appears with other principals from "X2" at a special event Friday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Campus Center Ballroom.

The public is invited to the free event.

"X2" director Bryan Singer, and screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, will be on hand. The event will be hosted by Chris Lee, founding co-director of the university's cinematic and digital arts program. Clips from "X2" will be shown.

Hu also is the star attraction in the Honolulu production of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Hawaii Theatre May 21-25. Starla Benford and Amy J. Carle will co-star.

"The Vagina Monologues" will put the actress on a theater stage for the first time since she was a student at the Kamehameha Schools, she told The Advertiser.

Born in Honolulu, with Chinese, Hawaiian and English ancestry, Hu set her sights on an acting career as a teenager. In 1985, she was crowned Miss Teen USA, and in 1993, she was Miss Hawaii USA, going on to become a finalist in the Miss USA Pageant.

Her first acting job was a guest-star role on the television sitcom "Growing Pains."

Hu starred with Jet Li and DMX in the action film "Cradle To The Grave," and with The Rock in "Scorpion King."
