Sailor faces hearing in deaths
A pre-trial hearing will be held Monday for a Pearl Harbor sailor accused of premeditated murder in the deaths of his wife and mother-in-law last June 10.
If convicted at court-martial, hull technician 2nd Class David A. DeArmond, 32, could face the death penalty. Motions are expected to be heard at the 8:30 a.m. hearing at Pearl Harbor.
Zaleha DeArmond died from a blow to the head from an iron skillet at the couple's Hokulani subdivision military housing, officials said. Her mother, Saniah B. Abdul Ghani, who was visiting from Singapore, was stabbed to death.
DeArmond is being held at the Navy Brig on Ford Island.
$66M in bonds to aid utility
The Department of Budget and Finance has issued $66 million in refunding special purpose revenue bonds to assist Hawaiian Electric Co. and its subsidiary, Hawai'i Electric Light Co. on the Big Island, with the refinancing of existing revenue bonds.
The bonds were issued in 1990 and 1992 at higher rates. Gov. Linda Lingle said the bond sale will save about $22.5 million in gross debt service costs over the life of the bonds.
Lingle said the benefit of the bond sale should be passed on to electricity customers and result in more stable utility rates over time.
