BYUH men, women in West Region tennis finals

The top-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated Sonoma State, 5-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Region Tournament yesterday in La'ie.

The Lady Seasiders (32-0) will play UC-San Diego (17-5) today for the West Region championship. UC-San Diego eliminated Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-3, yesterday. The Vulcans fell to 16-8.

The second-ranked BYUH men (25-1) received a first-round bye and will play UC-Davis (5-12) today for the West Region championship.

UC-Davis defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-0.

The BYUH women and men are the defending Division II national champions. The winners of today's matches will advance to the 16-team, single-elimination NCAA II National Championship tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May 8-11.

In another West regional, the Hawai'i Pacific women's team defeated UC-Davis, 5-3, at the Cal Poly Pomona tennis complex in Pomona, Calif.

The Lady Sea Warriors (11-6) will play Cal Poly Pomona (18-4) today in the second round.

The HPU men's team (15-3) received a first-round bye and will play UC-San Diego (19-5) in the West Region championship match today at San Diego.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Internship for UH's Singletary: Vantz Singletary, who coaches the University of Hawai'i defensive linemen, has received an internship with the NFL's San Diego Chargers.

Singletary, who did not apply for the internship, was picked from a field of about 250 coaches. Singletary will receive a stipend of $2,500, as well as free housing and meals, to assist at the Chargers' minicamp, from June 1-9, and training camp, from July 5-Aug. 5.

"It's a blessing from upstairs," said Singletary, who previously served internships with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.

UH BASEBALL

Ka'aihue, Thurber sign: The University of Hawai'i baseball team has signed Kala Ka'aihue and Nate Thurber for the 2003-04 season, according to coach Mike Trapasso.

Ka'aihue earned honorable mention All-State as a catcher for Iolani last year, and his brother, Kila, was drafted in the 15th round by the Kansas City Royals in last year's Major League Baseball draft.

Thurber is a right-handed outfielder at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College, and is batting .433 with 17 home runs, 13 doubles, 53 RBIs and 57 runs scored in 48 games this season. Thurber will be a junior when he joins the Rainbows next season.

Kahuku, Pearl City win titles: The Kahuku girls and Pearl City boys won team titles in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Judo Championships yesterday at Leilehua.

The Kahuku girls beat Leilehua in the final, and Pearl City in its semifinal. Leilehua beat Farrington to get to the final.

The Pearl City boys defeated Mililani for the title, and Moanalua in the semifinal. Mililani beat 'Aiea in the other semifinal.

MAUI BASEBALL

Baldwin stops Maui: The Baldwin Bears beat Maui High, 8-4, yesterday in the Maui Interscholastic League Tournament at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.

In another game, Moloka'i ousted St. Anthony, 7-4.

The tournament continues today at Iron Maehara Stadium with Maui playing Moloka'i at 4 p.m. The winner takes on Baldwin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
