Waiakea sweeps BIIF baseball

Myles Ioane pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk as the Waiakea Warriors defeated the Hilo Vikings, 3-2, yesterday in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Tournament Championship game.

Waiakea, which also won the BIIF regular-season championship, clinched the BIIF's top seed in the state tournament. Hilo earned the BIIF's second seed.

Maui, Baldwin to play again: Vance Otake, Maika Carpio and Curtis Russell each paired hits as the Maui Sabers beat the Baldwin Bears, 16-11, last night at Iron Maehara Stadium to force a playoff for the Maui Interscholastic League tournament championship.

They will play Thursday at 6 p.m. at Iron Maehara Stadium.

In yesterday's first game, Jon Cayan allowed one run on eight hits, striking out one and walking none as Maui beat Moloka'i, 3-1, to earn the right to play Baldwin.

FOOTBALL

Brawny and bright: Seventeen Hawai'i high school seniors will be honored tonight as football scholar-athletes.

In addition, Charlie Miyashiro will be recognized for many years of service as a high school football coach and mentor to thousands in Hilo and Honolulu.

Each player achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average, demonstrated leadership and contributed community service. One will be nominated for the foundation's national scholar-athlete program and two will receive scholarships from the local chapter.

The fifth annual scholar-athlete banquet of Hawai'i Chapter 242 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will be held at 6 p.m. at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier is keynote speaker. The student honorees:

TENNIS

State tourney seedings: Defending boys champion Robbie Lim of Punahou and 2002 girls runner-up Michelle Pautler of Hawai'i Prep are the No. 1 singles seeds for the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association championship tournament Thursday through Saturday at Central O'ahu Regional Park in Waipi'o.

Semifinals will be at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and championship matches will follow at 10 a.m.

Saint Louis, Kamehameha win ILH titles: The Saint Louis boys and Kamehameha girls won team titles in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Judo Championships yesterday at Klum Gym.

The Crusaders, who earned their third straight ILH title, scored 135 points, distancing themselves from Pac-Five's 116. Kamehameha finished third with 113.

The Warrior girls scored 137 points, beating out Punahou with 98, and Pac-Five with 95.
