State high school girls soccer Player of the Year Adria Campbell will play at Southern Methodist University next season.
Campbell said she was recruited by new SMU coach John Cossaboon after he watched the Hawai'i state tournament on Maui in February. Campbell scored five goals in her first two games and was chosen MVP of the tournament as Punahou won its first state championship since 1998.
She visited the campus in Dallas last month and said, "It all made a good impression the girls, the area and the school."
Campbell said she was told she will play forward (she scored 17 goals in 13 games this season) and will not be redshirted next fall. She was the leader or co-leader in O'ahu private-school goal-scoring the past three seasons.
Punahou coach Jorge Barbosa said, "Adria will succeed because she is a talented, dedicated, hard-working, humble, unassuming, unselfish student-athlete with a burning desire to excel and always do what's best for her team. She truly is a coach's dream."
Her club team coach, Leahi's Michelle Nagamine, added, "She could be at the University of Iceland and still manage to be tan and have fun all year long. She's just that kind of kid. She finds ways to make things happen."
Campbell said she is looking forward to playing against Hawai'i in a Western Athletic Conference game Oct. 3 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. She will get to play against the 2001 and 2002 state players of the year, Baldwin's Nicole Garbin and Mililani's Mele French, when their Oregon team plays SMU in Dallas on Sept. 21.
2001 state Boys Player of the Year Duke Hashimoto (Iolani) was chosen to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Newcomer team for the 12th-ranked Mustangs last season. 2002 All-State forward Ricky Shinn (Pearl City) will make an official visit to SMU on Sunday and is expected to sign with the Mustangs "if he likes what he sees," said his father, Larry.
