UH's Sopoaga on Nagurski list: The Charlotte Touchdown Club and the Football Writers Association of America have announced the 2003 watch list of candidates for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's top defensive college players.

Three players from the Western Athletic Conference have been named to the watch list, including University of Hawai'i defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga.

Hongo's team tops Pro-Am: Ben Hongo and his team of Keith Nagata, Cedric Chun, Craig Lee and Mike Nitta won the Verizon Hawai'i Hall of Fame Pro-Am yesterday at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, shooting a 21-under-par 52.

Twenty seven teams participated in the Pro-Am.

The first round of the championship begins today.

SOCCER

Ching sparks Earthquakes: Hale'iwa's Brian Ching (Kamehameha, 1996) factored into both of his San Jose Earthquakes' goals in their 2-0 win against the New England Revolution in a Major League Soccer game yesterday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

Three minutes before the half, Ching, 24, was battling for position with Carlos Llamosa on a free kick by Jeff Agoos. The ball deflected off of Llamosa for an own goal.

Ching scored later in the second half, on a header from a cross from Brian Mullan, in the 56th minute.

"Brian Mullan served a great ball to me and I just beat my defender and headed past the goalkeeper," Ching said. "Brian made it easy for me. The space opened up at the near post and I just filled the space."

Four from Hawai'i among select: Four Hawai'i soccer players were selected for the United States Adult Soccer Association National Select Team Region IV camp, which provides players the opportunity to train in a competitive environment, with the purpose of being singled out for the selection to the National or professional teams.

They are University of Hawai'i goalkeeper Mahie Atay, former Southern California midfielder Carol Hatcher, and two former Hawai'i Pacific players: defender Iovo Stefanov and midfielder Jordan Inouye.

The camp is in Seattle from June 18-22, and consists of players from California, Washington, Idaho, and Hawai'i.
