Man survives fall off lookout ledge

A 52-year-old man escaped serious injury last night after he was allegedly pushed off a ledge at the Diamond Head Lookout during a confrontation with an acquaintance. Honolulu police estimate the man fell 50 feet but said his fall was broken by shrubs.

The case is classified as an attempted murder and a 51-year-old man with no permanent local address is being held as a suspect. Police said the two men were among a group of surfers drinking at the lookout when the suspect allegedly punched the complainant, knocking him over the retaining wall. Witnesses told police the suspect continued to punch the man before pushing him over the ledge.

Accident victims identified

Honolulu recorded its 31st traffic fatality of the year late Saturday when a passenger in a 2002 black Mitsubishi sedan died after the vehicle hit a concrete barrier on H-1 Freeway eastbound in the Pearl City area.

Scotty Ricks, 25, a soldier stationed at Schofield Barracks, was pronounced dead on arrival at The Queen's Medical Center.

Police said the driver was also taken to Queen's, in serious but stable condition.

The crash occurred one-fifth of a mile east of the Ka'ahumanu Overpass at 11:35 p.m.

The car hit the concrete barrier at a high rate of speed, went out of control and rolled over several times before coming to rest against the makai curbing, police said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, investigators said.

The victim of a Friday crash in Makakilo was identified today as Jett Dinio, 15, of Kapolei.
