BEST BETS

• Students who have made it to the final round in the first University of Hawai'i STUDENT INVENTION COMPETITION — modeled after similar events at such Mainland colleges as Purdue University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) — will show off their wares in final competition Thursday on the Manoa campus. On view will be "marketable" entries, from recreational equipment to user-friendly computer systems, built using skills gleaned from university study, including software development, engineering, chemistry, materials science and electronics. The event is planned noon to 3 p.m. at the UH School of Architecture auditorium. Cash prizes will be awarded. The event is free and open to the public. Information: 539-3829.

• The heads of four successful businesses — including ABC Stores — will offer their expertise on "NEGOTIATING YOUR (retail business) LEASE," in a retail seminar, co-sponsored by the Retail Merchants of Hawai'i (RMH). The presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session, will be held 8 to 10 a.m., May 14, at Ward Warehouse, Kaka'ako Room. Panelists include Paul Kosasa, president of ABC Stores; Maile Meyer, president of Na Mea Hawai'i; Bob Taylor, president and chief executive officer, Maui Divers Jewelry; and Jen Kunishima, president of Hawaii Doggie Bakery. MONDAY

• National workforce expert Ed Barlow is scheduled to speak to local business leaders today about O'ahu's employment and labor trends. The speech, "Aligning Hawai'i's Economic Development and Workforce with Global Realities," is scheduled 7:30 to 9 a.m. at The Plaza Club, Pioneer Plaza. The presentation is sponsored by Enterprise Honolulu, a nonprofit economic development organization financed by O'ahu's private sector; and the O'ahu Workforce Investment Board (OWIB). OWIB is a volunteer 33-member board working to strengthen the link between the island's workforce and its economic development. Barlow will discuss current and future trends that will affect O'ahu's business community, and the importance of developing a labor pool that can respond to an ever-changing business environment. TUESDAY

Three sets of workshops on starting a business — including such topics as business loans, taxes and marketing — will be scheduled this month by the Honolulu Community Action Program. All are scheduled 9 a.m. to noon.

  • Tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday; and May 27, 28 and 29, at their main offices, 1109 Maunakea St., second floor.
  • May 13, 14, and 15 at their Windward office in Waimanalo, 41-347 Kalaniana'ole Highway.

• "HOW TO SHORTEN THE TIME IT TAKES TO GET A COLLEGE DEGREE," a free seminar especially designed for working adults with some college, military or working experience, will be offered at 5:30 p.m. by Hawai'i Pacific University, at 1164 Bishop St., Suite 1100. Information: 544-9300.

• The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU will offer free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, scheduled 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., will offer advice on business startup, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center, and SCORE. The program is open to all clients of the center who have attended a center orientation, offered 9 a.m. Tuesdays or 2 p.m. Thursdays at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave., (#A).
