• Prominent local attorney JEFFREY N. WATANABE has been elected to the board of directors of Alexander & Baldwin Inc. (A&B). Watanabe is founder and partner in the Honolulu law firm of Watanabe Ing Kawashima & Komeiji LLP, known for its practice of corporate law. He is a former state deputy attorney general and has served as chief counsel for the state in matters before federal transportation agencies. Watanabe, the 10th A&B board member, will also serve on the board of A&B's largest subsidiary, Matson Navigation Co. Inc. He also serves on a number of other corporate boards, including Hawaiian Electric Industries and subsidiaries; First Insurance Co. of Hawaii Ltd. and Grace Pacific Corp.

• CHRISTOPHER J. BENJAMIN, who joined A&B in August, 2001, as director, corporate development and planning, has been promoted to vice president, corporate development and planning.

DOUGLAS WELD, who joined City Bank a year ago as senior vice president of the bank's Credit Division, and chief lending officer, has been promoted to executive vice president. The 27-year banking veteran was previously with Tokai bank of California as chief credit officer, and then, as executive officer with its successor, United California Bank.

He joins three previously appointed executive vice presidents: DEAN K. HIRATA, WARREN Y. KUNIMOTO and JASEN H. TAKEI.

Hilo Hattie has tapped four in its management core for key positions:

  • FELIX CALVO, who will remain store manager of Hilo Hattie's Kihei, Maui, location, was promoted to the new position of area manager for the Hawai'i region. As such, he will oversee operation of seven Hawai'i stores (excluding the Nimitz flagship location), and oversee training, coaching and preparation for new stores in the region. Calvo has also helped open Hilo Hattie stores in Guam and Miami, as well as managing stores on O'ahu and Maui, as well as Tennessee
  • BRENT POTTER, former general manager of the Hawai'i flagship store on Nimitz Highway, was named to the new position of director of new business, overseeing E-commerce, wholesale and the uniform and custom prints divisions.
  • SHELLY EASTON, most recently general manager of the company's Ala Moana Shopping Center location, was named general manager of Hilo Hattie's 31,000-square-foot Nimitz store. She has also opened Hilo Hattie's newest Hawai'i store in Kihei, Maui, and has managed Hilo Hattie's chain of Island Collections stores.
  • KIT SAKURAI, a former 14-year veteran of Crazy Shirts, has been named new general manager of Hilo Hattie's Ala Moana store. She was hired in December 2002, as assistant manager of the Nimitz store location.

ANNA COFFEEN has been named advertising and public relations coordinator for Atlantis Adventures, owner and operator of Atlantis Submarines, and sales and marketing provider for Sea Life Park Hawaii and Waimea Falls Park. She is responsible for developing all promotional materials, and serving as liaison with vendors. She was former advertising and marketing assistant for Oahu Publications.

GAIL U. RENARD has been promoted to senior associate of Helber Hastert & Fee Planners Inc., which specializes in land use and environmental planning throughout Hawai'i and the Pacific Basin. The 14-year company veteran has focused on environmental, historic, and infrastructure research and analysis for land use, facility, transportation and housing planning. She has also worked as project manager for both public and private planning projects.

• Two new sales managers have been named at the recently remodeled Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort: DENISE MEYER, former sales manager for Dole Cannery ballrooms, named wedding sales manager; and ELAINE REED, former sales manager at the Guam Marriott Resort, responsible for the corporate and business transient markets.

• State Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee and retired Maui Circuit Court Judge BOYD P. MOSSMAN has been named 2003 Outstanding Member by the local chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society. The international organization, which works to promote high moral and professional standards in the legal profession, recognized Mossman for outstanding contributions to his profession and the community. Mossman attracted statewide attention for ingenuity sentencing criminal defendants, including offering the option of standing at a busy intersection with signs identifying themselves as criminal defendants. Mossman was also instrumental in establishing the Maui Drug Court and continues to serve as a director. The retired judge now works as a mediator and arbitrator in private practice.

• Hawaii Insurance Consultants Ltd. (HIC), a subsidiary of AIG Hawaii, has promoted MATTHEW LIEW and JOHN MCCARRON to assistant vice presidents. Ten-year insurance industry veteran Liew most recently served as senior account executive at HIC, focusing on sales and account management. McCarron, a 13-year information technology veteran, serves as information technology manager at HIC.
