Hula's Sonny Ching goes pin-up punk

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Sonny Ching, kumu hula of Halau Na Mamo 'O Pu'uanahulu, has a modern side. He goes punk, with spiked hair, earrings, and chains, for a photo in a 2004 calendar designed by graphic artist Stacey Leong Mills.

Ching, a perennial contender and past winner of the Merrie Monarch Festival, will be the April figure in the calendar, photographed by Jon Mozo, a North Shore shooter and surfer.

Mills has won a design award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts' Honolulu chapter, for Ching's Web site, www.sonnyching.com.
