One dead after crash on H-1 near Pearl City

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu recorded its 31st traffic fatality of the year late Saturday when a passenger in a 2002 black Mitsubishi sedan died after the vehicle hit a concrete barrier on H-1 Freeway eastbound in the Pearl City area.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at The Queen's Medical Center.

Police said the driver was also taken to Queen's, in serious but stable condition.

The crash occurred one-fifth of a mile east of the Ka'ahumanu Overpass at 11:35 p.m.

The car hit the concrete barrier at a high rate of speed, went out of control and rolled over several times before coming to rest against the makai curbing, police said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, investigators said, but the car was traveling at high speed and neither of the men was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash occurred on a dry roadway in light traffic.
