Moped driver critically injured

A 50-year-old Liliha man was critically injured yesterday when he apparently fell off his moped on North Kuakini Street near Sereno Street in Nu'uanu. No other vehicles were involved in the 1:07 p.m. accident.

Police said the moped skidded to a stop near a traffic signal for no apparent reason and tipped over. The man, who was not wearing a safety helmet, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he is in critical condition, police said.


Weapon search comes up empty

Police searched unsuccessfully on Friday for a murder weapon in the brush along the 'Aiea Loop Trail where the body of 11-year-old Kahealani Indreginal was found Dec. 13.

Homicide Lt. Bill Kato said Specialized Services Division officers assisted homicide investigators in the half-day search for a metal object, possibly with one sharp end. "We've been meaning to come back and do a complete search of the area for a weapon," Kato said.

Christopher Clayburn Aki, who is charged with killing Kahealani, told police he threw a metal object into the water where Halawa Stream empties into Pearl Harbor. Police sent divers into the water the week before Christmas but found nothing.

The murder weapon as well as the girl's gold bracelets have not been recovered. Police are still awaiting test results of blood evidence recovered from Aki's car, said Kato.


Navy man, cab driver robbed

A Navy man and cab driver were robbed at knifepoint yesterday in Pearlridge and Wahiawa, respectively.

The Navy man was stabbed in the 4:45 a.m. Pearlridge robbery during a struggle with a man, who fled on foot. The victim was taken to Tripler Medical Center where he was treated and released, police said.

The Wahiawa robbery was reported at 3:30 a.m. The cab driver, 53, told police a man he had taken from Waikiki to Wahiawa put a knife to his throat and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.


Motorcycle crash victim identified

A man critically injured April 28 when he was thrown from his 2001 Suzuki motorcycle while trying to avoid a collision at a Makiki intersection died the next day at The Queen's Medical Center. The medical examiner's office identified the man as Irwin Lee, 21.
