THE LEFT LANE
Documentary profile of Rell Sunn to air

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Jan-Sunn Carreira says of her mother, Rell, "It's so graceful seeing Mom on a wave. That's what it is, it's grace."

Hawai'i viewers will be graced with the late surfer's words and images — on television, at least — when KHET this week airs "Heart of the Sea: Kapolioka'ehukai," a one-hour documentary that includes several interviews with Rell Sunn, above, who died of cancer in 1998. The documentary airs today at 8 p.m. and midnight, then again at 9 Saturday night.

Sandler stroll sighted

SANDLER
Adam Sandler alerts: The "Anger Management" star, who's filming "Fifty First Kisses" on O'ahu with Drew Barrymore, was spotted strolling the beach — alone — in front of the Kahala Mandarin at sunset Sunday. Though Sandler has a reputation as standoffish, he waved and greeted admirers.

And high school students won't be acting blasé during THIS outing: Students from Kapolei, Kalaheo and Maryknoll will spend May 15 at Sea Life Park as "Kisses" extras, filling the seats at a dolphin show.

For Maryknoll sophomores, it's a class field trip. "I put out an e-mail, and teachers wanted to go, too," said principal Betsey Gunderson.

So you wanna be a stand-up comic?

BUMATAI
After selling out his first session, veteran comedian Andy Bumatai starts a second round of stand-up comic classes Monday at the Academy of Film & Television Inc. in Kaka'ako.

"Andy teaches a really great class," said Scott Rogers, who runs the acting school.

The one-month course runs Monday and Tuesday nights. Stand-up wannabes test their material at 6:30 p.m. Sundays at the Ward Center Brew Moon pub. Information: 596-8300.

Correction: PBS Hawai'i airs the documentary on the late surfer Rell Sunn, "Heart of the Sea: Kapolioka'ehukai" at 8 p.m. and midnight today. It will be re-aired at 9 p.m. Saturday. Some information in a previous version of this column was incorrect.
