Rainbows' Ramos WAC Player of Week

Two days after helping her team win the Western Athletic Conference softball championship, University of Hawai'i senior Trisha Ramos was named the WAC Player of the Week yesterday.

Ramos, a third baseman from Lihu'e, Kaua'i, batted .400 in six games last week, including seven hits and two home runs in the clinching four-game sweep of Louisiana Tech.

Ramos is hitting .291 as UH prepares for the NCAA regionals. Pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be announced Sunday.

SAILING

UH gains nationals: The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team dominated the A Division to win the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Dinghy Championship in Los Angeles last weekend and qualify for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Championship next month in Detroit, Mich.

UH scored a combined 64 points to win the event, followed by Stanford (69), USC (77), UC Santa Barbara (79) and UC Irvine (109).

Hawai'i's Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock won six races and placed second in five to score 16 points in A Division. UH's B Division team of Joey Pasquali, Steven Brown, Sarah Hitchcock and Sarah Reed scored 48 points.

GOLF

Fame for Carll: Kevin Carll shot a 2-over-par 75 yesterday, including a birdie on the 663-yard 18th, to finish at 5-under 141 and win the Verizon Hawai'i Hall of Fame Championship by two strokes on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Maui.

Kevin Hayashi shot a 1-under 72 to finish at 143, followed by Jay Taise (144) and Brad Bowen (146).

Larry Stubblefield closed with a 72 to finish at 142 and win the Senior Division by seven strokes over runner-up Rodney Acia.

WATER POLO

Brooks named MVP: Brandon Brooks of Honolulu was selected Most Valuable Goalkeeper of USA Water Polo's Premier League Championship Tournament on Sunday.

Brooks, a 1999 Punahou School graduate and an All-American at UCLA last fall, helped the Los Angeles Water Polo club defeat the San Francisco Bay Area National Team, 6-5, in Sunday's championship game.

Brooks is in the pool of players from which the 2004 U.S. Olympic team will be selected.

UH CAMPS

Rainbow Wahine: Spots are still available at all Rainbow Wahine volleyball, softball and basketball camps this summer.

Volleyball camps will be from 1-5 p.m. June 24-27, July 16-19, July 30-Aug. 2 and Aug. 4-7. Cost is $135 and boys and girls entering grades 4-12 are eligible.

The softball camps will be from 4-7 p.m. June 11-13, 4-6 p.m. July 22-24 and 4-7 p.m. Aug. 13-15. The first and last camps are $75. Cost for Camp 2 is $25 per day, with campers to choose what days to attend; the first day is fielding, second hitting and third pitching.

Basketball's first session, for boys and girls ages 6-12, will be from 1-4 p.m. June 16-18. It costs $75. The second session, for girls age 12 to those entering their senior year in high school, is from 1-5 p.m. June 19-21. It costs $90.
