THE LEFT LANE
America in focus

Advertiser Staff and News Services

How do you tell the story of our great, big United States in just one week — without relying on words?

Rick Smolan and David Elliot Cohen, co-authors of the 1986 photography book "A Day in the Life of America," plan on dispatching a thousand professional photographers across all 50 states from Monday through May 18, creating a "digital time capsule of American life." The results will be compiled in a series of books by DK Publishing.

Amateur photographers also can contribute their shots of everyday life in their community. To submit a photo, visit www.america24-7.com.

Here's a slogan we thought you already knew: "Sex has consequences." Apparently — with four out of 10 girls nationwide becoming pregnant at least once before age 20 — that message is not getting through.

Today is National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Teens are encouraged to go to www.teenpregnancy.org or www.teenpeople.com and take a short, scenario-based quiz that challenges them to think about what they might do.

Cocoa-butter products

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula is an inexpensive way to soothe dry skin. The line includes a body wash, body oil, lotion, cream and lip balm. Each product costs less than $7 and can be found at local grocery and drug stores.

Skintight and sexy

Posters for "Lara Croft, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" have been arriving in theaters. Whether they'll remain there for the film's July 25 release or be plundered by fans is another question.

Lara Croft is attired in a wet suit that can only be described as painted on. Actress Angelina Jolie says she's surprised that the poster is creating such a fuss.
