Iolani's Morrissey headed to Harvard

By Dennis Anderson

Iolani's multi-talented Patrick Morrissey says he has accepted an invitation to attend Harvard University next fall and probably will concentrate on swimming in college.

Morrissey has the best 1500-meter time and second-best 800-meter time of entrants in Saturday's state track and field championships at the Kamehameha Schools.

But he also was an All-American in swimming for Iolani's state championship team and feels his future is in the water.

"I am not 100 percent sure ... but I am leaning toward swimming, as my All-American times will allow me to be the most competitive in this area," he said.

Morrissey led off the All-America gold-medal 200-yard freestyle relay team, anchored the gold-medal 200 medley relay team, placed second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle at the state championships on March 1.

He finished second in last fall's state cross country championships.

Morrissey, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, was also captain of Iolani's cross country, track and swimming teams.

Harvard, like all Ivy League schools, does not give athletic scholarships, but does actively recruit outstanding student-athletes.

VOLLEYBALL

• Chow to Rice: Punahou setter Marissa Chow said she will attend Rice University and has been invited to try out for libero and back-up setter.

She also had made official recruiting visits to Dartmouth, Air Force and Lehigh and unofficial visits to several others, including St. John's (N.Y.), which recruited her heavily, Brown (R.I.) and Carlton (Minn).

At Rice, Chow will join her Quickset club teammate Amber Weidermann of Mililani High, who signed last fall. Chow has a 3.7 grade-point average.

Rice, under new coach Jon Wilson, will play Hawai'i in Houston on Oct. 23.
