HPU coach won't head to nationals with teams

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Pacific men's and women's tennis coach Henry Somerville will not be accompanying his teams this week to the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and will instead stay home to care for his pregnant wife.

Somerville and his wife, Rowena, are expecting their first child soon. Rowena's physician diagnosed her pregnancy as "high risk" and she was ordered to have home-monitoring care.

"I'm humbly torn between caring for my wife and newborn, and coaching the teams at the national championships," Somerville said. "The birth of our first child is meaningful and significant to the growth of our family. My wife's health and well-being is a priority right now and I have confidence in my coaching staff and teams that they will do well."

The seventh-ranked HPU men's team will play North Florida University tomorrow. The 11th-ranked HPU women's team will play Georgia College and State University tomorrow.

The defending champion Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's and women's teams will play Lander and Armstrong Atlantic, respectively, tomorrow. The BYUH men are ranked second and the BYUH women are ranked first.

SURFING

• Garcia withdraws: Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae withdrew from the Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday because of a recurring knee injury.

Garcia, the 2000 world champion, tore two ligaments in his right knee last year, but never had surgery.

Four other Hawai'i surfers will compete in the contest: world champion Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, Kalani Robb and Conan Hayes.

Three other Hawai'i competitors are in the women's division: Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly.

The opening rounds of the contest were postponed yesterday because of small surf.
