Keiki sunglasses help protect young eyes

Hawai'i parents often go to great lengths to protect their keiki's skin from sun damage, but how often do they push a pair of sunglasses? Not often enough, says Dr. Malcolm Ing, a Honolulu ophthalmologist.

Children's eyes are more susceptible because their lenses don't block as much UV as adult lenses do. Ing recommends Eyes Cream Shades, kiddie-sized sunglasses that block 100 percent UVA and UVB rays and are made of impact-resistant polycarbonate. To satisfy the "cool" quotient with kids, they come in colors called blueberry and watermelon ice.

They come in a little plastic pouch with a clip so they can be attached to a backpack or belt loop. They're available at optical shops.

Slam poets of Hawai'i, get ready to rumble

Slam poetry may have its heart in hip-hop, but its soul goes back to ancient cultures. That's the premise that spoken-word artist Katana is basing tonight's event on.

Katana (Rhonda Hayashi) is hosting a poetry competition, at the University of Hawai'i- Manoa art auditorium at 6 p.m., for cash prizes and a chance to be on the Hawai'i team that will compete nationally next summer.

The evening will also feature performances by DJs, step dancers, and halau. Admission is $5 at the door, $10 to compete. To pre-register, call 737-9858

YAMASATO
From beauty queen to television ninja

From beauty queen to ninja maiden — Alicia Michioka, Miss Hawai'i USA 2003, has been signed to portray a ninja in "Blood of the Samurai: The Series," a low-budget TV sequel to writer-director Aaron Yamasato's indie feature.

Michioka will play Yuki in the Hellcat Productions LLC project, which begins production this summer. "I'm a huge fan of martial arts, and I have great respect for people who practice it," she said. "It's going to be a lot of fun."

Kaua'i-based filmmaker Yamasato said the Hawai'i Stunt Connection, led by actor-stuntman Achilles S.C. Gacis, will coordinate stunts. Dale Radomski, who worked on such TV projects as "The Break," "Jake and the Fatman" and "Raven," and film features such as "Picture Bride" and "Pearl Harbor," will be stunt coordinator.

Six episodes will be filmed, with Bryan Yamasaki and Michael Ng as samurai heroes Trent and Rob, Colleen Fujioka and Stephanie Sanchez as their girlfriends, Brooke and Roxy, and Superbrawl champion Egan Inoue as Shinzo, fearsome leader of the syndicate.
