Foundation gives out $102,000 to students

The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation has awarded scholarships to an outstanding senior at every qualifying high school in the state — 57 in all for a total of $102,000.

Since the foundation was begun in 1993 by the founders of chocolate manufacturing company Hawaiian Host, more than $900,000 has been given to students based on academic achievement and financial need.

This year the top winners were Shannon M. Chow of Roosevelt High School and Jane J. Chung of Moanalua High School. They were named recipients of the Distinguished Student Award and each received $13,000 in scholarships.

Stephanie Speirs of Iolani School was given the Karen Uno Outstanding Student Award and $8,000 in scholarships.

The remaining 10 finalists received a total of $3,000 in scholarships. They are: Eisha A Matsubara of Waiakea High; Britnee A.M. Boeder of Waimea High; Marygrace S. Barba of Waipahu High; Matthew D.A. Jachowski of Maui High; Sienna M. Palmer of Kahuku High; Ling Lu of Sacred Hearts Academy and Samuel P. Ulin of Seabury Hall on Maui.

All other winners received $1,000 scholarships.
