Campbell, Mid-Pac top math bowl

Advertiser Staff

Teams from Campbell High School and Mid-Pacific Institute won top honors last weekend at the 25th State Math Team Championships held at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.

The state math bowl tries to stimulate interest in math through challenges that can be compared to sports events. It is the only statewide math contest where all public and private high schools are invited to compete as teams rather than as individuals.

In the large-school division, Campbell High students Cary Kawamoto, Gary Ramirez and Joan Suniga captured first place along with their coaches Aaron Lee and Carol Domen

Punahou School was second, and Roosevelt High School was third.

In the small-schools division, Mid-Pacific Institute students Shukuko Fujitani, Jillian Haraguchi and Cynthia Huang, with the alternate team of Tiffany Koc, Jason Tang, Fred Wong, and Jay Yamamoto won first place. Their coaches were C. Dian Nielsen, Michael Jaros and Candace Kanja.

Hanalani Schools was second, and Hawai'i Baptist Academy was third.

The Hawai'i Association of Mathematics and the Hawai'i Council of Teachers of Mathematics coordinate the math bowl.
