Farrington's Paepaetele Poasa soars above the Kahuku defense, including post player Latoya Wily (44) for a shot attempt in the third quarter.

The Farrington High School girls basketball team continued its roll through the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Tournament last night, knocking off East No. 2 seed Kahuku, 56-46, in semifinal action at Moanalua gym.

The No. 4-seeded Governors will play No. 1 Moanalua, a 41-32 winner over McKinley, for the championship at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the University of Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center.

Farrington (10-3) had lost to Kahuku, 48-41, in the regular season about three weeks ago. But in the playoffs, the Govs defeated Leilehua, 61-31, and West No. 1 seed Pearl City, 46-45, before racing past the Red Raiders (10-2) last night before a raucous crowd of about 800.

Unlike the first meeting, Farrington took control early in the first half and Kahuku could not get closer than five points the rest of the way. Sunshine Misa-Uli again led the Governors with a game-high 22 points, including 10 during a third period that ended with Farrington's biggest lead at 39-24.

The Red Raiders closed to 43-38 on Latoya Wily's putback with 2:40 remaining, but point guard Revelyn Cabaya sank six free throws in a row to push the lead back to 49-38 with 1:52 left — too big a hill for Kahuku to climb.

"After we lost to them, we tried to look at the positives and said, 'Let's get back in the playoffs and pull through this,' " said Misa-Uli, an agile power forward. "Our coach (Jenic Tumaneng) kept telling us we're a state (tournament) team, and we can do this. Now we're more motivated to win the championship."

McKinley built a 19-14 lead at halftime, sparked by Bre Carson's nine points. But Moanalua's Kepua Lee hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and Patti Hardimon added a layup to tie the score at 19. The Menehunes then got a jumper and free throw by Lee, a bank shot by Marleen Leautu and a putback by Leautu to take a 26-20 advantage.

"I was surprised at halftime, because I never thought our whole team would be off like that," said Hardimon, who finished with a game-high 13 points. "We were disappointed, but in the third period, everyone stepped it up."

Amber Lee scored all six of the Tigers' points in the third quarter to help them close to 30-25 entering the fourth, and then Rayna Isaki hit a 3-pointer and Carson sank a jumper to tie it at 30.

But Moanalua answered with another run, scoring on Leautu's turnaround jumper, plus a 3-pointer and three free throws by Hardimon and a free throw by Amy Kotani.

"That's how our team gets — when we get a lead or tie it, we relax," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "You can't do that against this kind of team."
