Active duty military get free round

Active duty military members can play a free round of golf this month at Honolulu Country Club.

Tee times are available around 10 a.m. weekdays. Call 941-8201 to reserve a time. All golfers will play with a club member. Clubs are available for rental. Players can walk, but a cart is "highly encouraged" at $15 per person.

The program is designed to show appreciation for the military during Military Appreciation Month


Golf clinic May 24 at Waikoloa

Waikoloa Beach Resort will have a "Kick Off to Summer" golf clinic May 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Kings' Course.

The clinic, conducted by Waikoloa pros, is designed to help juniors (ages 8-17) with their long game, short game and putting. There will be video analysis (participants must provide their own VHS tapes) and competitions in chipping and putting. There will be demonstration junior clubs available at the practice range.

The Waikoloa Junior Golf Academy begins weekly clinics June 10. The program consists of 20 sessions over 10 weeks and tournaments throughout the summer.

Ko'olau to host women's event

American Golf's eighth annual Women in Golf Day will be May 24 at Ko'olau Golf Club.

The day includes free instruction designed for beginners in a "non-intimidating environment." There will also be merchandise sales, food and contests.

The event is presented by Golf for Women magazine. It benefits the fight against cancer and participants can make a donation toward breast cancer research, treatment, education and screening.

Ko Olina plans events

Ko Olina Golf Club will have its Summer Tee Off Extravaganza May 31-June 1. A "Pre-Father's Day Super Sale" will run both days.

That Saturday, Callaway will sponsor a putting contest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nike's short game contest is from noon to 3 p.m. and Taylor Made's long drive contest starts at 4 p.m. Three free clinics will be offered Sunday, with the full swing featured at 9 a.m., the short game at 10 and junior golf at 11. SHORT PUTTS: The Jennie K. Wilson Invitational, which traditionally fills its field quickly, still has openings for next week's tournament. Call 262-9227 for information . ... The Hawai'i Golf Representatives Association "Golf Sample Sale" will be tomorrow from 5-9 p.m. at the Blaisdell Center Hawai'i Suites. Equipment, shoes, accessories and clothing will be available. ... Hawai'i's Bev Kim and Lily Yao finished fifth in the championship flight of the 12th annual Trans Senior Four-Ball Championship, April 26-30 in Florida. Kim and Yao shot rounds of 80-80-79-239. Debby Go and Lancy Smith won at 222. ... Mark Chun won the Verizon Hawai'i Coral Creek Classic last month. It was the first Amatour event of 2003.
