Jim Bartels service scheduled tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

Jim Bartels

A funeral service for Jim Bartels — who worked passionately to preserve Honolulu's premier royal landmarks — will be held tomorrow at St. Andrew's Cathedral.

Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m.; service at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow at Washington Place. 'Ahahui Mamakakaua, the Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors, will stand as honor guards.

Bartels was the director of Washington Place and helped convert the governor's mansion into a museum that told the story of Hawai'i's last monarch, Queen Lili'uokalani.

Previously he was the 'Iolani Palace curator and managing director.

Bartels died of complications from cancer April 20 in California. He was 57.

Donations in his memory may be made to Washington Place or 'Iolani Palace.

The Friends of 'Iolani Palace will open the palace to the public Wednesday as a tribute to Bartels, former palace curator and managing director. The public may take free, self-guided tours of the palace during the "Evening of Aloha," 4 to 7 p.m.

Although Bartels left the palace staff in 1998, he continued to help annually with the training of new volunteer recruits and had been invited to return as a research consultant shortly before his illness was diagnosed, according to a release from the Friends.
