Hawai'i teams 3-1 in nationals

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's and women's tennis teams and the Hawai'i Pacific men's team each won first-round matches in the NCAA Division II National Tournament yesterday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The second-ranked BYUH men trailed 12th-ranked Lander (S.C.), 2-1, but received strong singles play to win, 5-2. The top-ranked BYUH women defeated sixth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.), 5-2.

The seventh-ranked HPU men's team swept fourth-ranked North Florida, 5-0. However, the 11th-ranked HPU women lost to seventh-ranked Georgia College, 5-0.

In today's quarterfinals, the BYUH men will play ninth-ranked Northwood (Mich.), the BYUH women will play 15th-ranked Abilene Christian (Texas) and the HPU men will play third-ranked Drury (Mo.).

The BYUH men and women are the defending NCAA Division II national champions.

• BYUH players honored: Freshman Anna Anikanova was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA II National Rookie of the Year. Anikanova was also given the same honor for the West Region. Sophomore teammate Judy Weng and sophomore men's player Jong-Woong Yoon were named West Region Players to Watch.
