The fire at 2705 Booth Road was reported at 8:03 p.m. Eight companies navigated the narrow road to get to the two-story home.
Firefighters declared the blaze extinguished at 10:47 p.m., said fire spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.
A couple and their two teenage sons were not at home at the time of the fire. But Tejada said the family rabbit died in the blaze.
Tejada said the top floor of the home was destroyed and the first floor suffered heavy damage. He said the home was not inhabitable. The Red Cross was called to assist the family.
Fire investigators last night were trying to determine the cause. Tejada said a damage estimate likely will be made today.
Wendy Lee lives three houses away from the home and said she did not know what was going on until her daughter came running into the house to say a neighbor's house was on fire.
"When we came out, the fire was just coming out, mostly to the right side," Lee said. She said she believes the house was being renovated.
