An undisclosed number of University of Hawai'i football players recently were disciplined for their role in a fight at a neighborhood restaurant in March, UH athletic director Herman Frazier confirmed.
"There was some unfavorable incident that took place and it was handled through team rules," said Frazier, who did not disclose the players' identities nor their punishments.
People familiar with the situation identified the restaurant as Magoo's Pizza on University Avenue.
They said police were called to the scene, although no complaint or arrest was listed on police records.
A spokeswoman for Magoo's declined to comment yesterday.
"There were some discipline issues that were handled," Frazier said.
No overtime: After further review, it was determined that UH defensive end Travis Laboy has one season of NCAA eligibility remaining.
Laboy transferred to UH in August 2000, redshirted that season and then started at rush end the past two seasons.
The UH coaches believed that Laboy's freshman year at Utah State would not count against his five-year eligibility clock. Using August 2000 as a starting point, Laboy's NCAA eligibility would extend through the 2004 season.
But it was determined that Laboy was at Utah State long enough to count his time there as a full season.
Air time: Frazier said he has reopened discussions about selling seats to the public on charter flights to road football games.
Last year, the Warriors used an Aloha Airlines' 124-seat jet to travel to four road games. Frazier said a Mainland charter company wants to work with UH this coming season.
It cost the Warriors an average of $96,000 for a Mainland roundtrip. Frazier said selling tickets to the public would help defray travel expenses.
Frazier said he wants to makes sure the charter company has enough planes and schedule flexibility to accommodate the Warriors' travel plans.
The Warriors have six road games this season, although they are expected to remain on the Mainland between the games against Southern California Sept. 13 and Nevada-Las Vegas Sept. 19.
