Punahou captures 7th water polo title in a row

Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha took a 1-0 lead early in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls' water polo championship game last night. But Punahou won 17-1 for its seventh consecutive league title.

Natale Rigg and Kamaile Crowell each scored five goals to lead Punahou, which has one senior on its 14-member roster.

Punahou regained the lead 2-1 by the end of first quarter, stretched it to 5-1 at halftime and 11-1 after three quarters.

Punahou coach Ken Smith said, "Our defense rose to the occasion. Our half-court defense fuels our fast break, where we can use our advantage in team speed — that was the difference in the game."

Smith said, "Everybody expected a big drop-off this season because we had so many girls graduating last year. But from the first day of the season, these girls picked up right where we left off last year with their work ethic and positive attitude."

Punahou finished 8-0. Kamehameha was 1-5 in the regular season, but upset Iolani in the semifinals to get into the league championship game. The Warriors finished 2-6.

Sara Rosa, Punahou's only senior, plans to play at Dartmouth.

Pun: Natale Rigg 5, Kamaile Crowell 5, Avery Cavanah 3, Sara Rosa 2, Cat Vinson 1, Angie Giancaterino 1. Kam: Tiare Nobrega.
