'Road Movie' begins Hawai'i run Thursday

Advertiser Staff

Mark Pinkosh of Starving Artists Theatre Company stars in "Road Movie" at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre, which opens Thursday.

But "Road Movie" is not a movie; It's a staged American odyssey. It was written by Londoner Godfrey Hamilton.

In the play, Pinkosh begins a journey in the San Francisco Bay Area, playing two men, at least one of whom falls in love at first sight.

After this romance ends, the main character, Joel, goes to New York — but soon is on his way back to California to try to rejoin the distant lover.

On the road, Pinkosh meets new characters. He plays all roles, including three eccentric women Joel encounters on his journey to reunite with his beloved. Humor and hard-won experience mingle in the presentation.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Starving Artists Theatre Company, founded in Hawai'i in 1983.

"Road Movie" is Starving Artists' most successful show ever. It has represented the United States at Dublin's International Festival, where it played at the legendary Abbey Theatre, and Toronto World Stage Festival.

It has been translated into Italian, French and German, and played lengthy seasons in London; Rome; Paris; and Munich, Germany.

Pinkosh, of Kailua, has been seen in "Road Movie" throughout the United States, including the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

Tim Bostock Productions and Starving Artists are co-producing the performances, 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sunday through May 24. There is also a 4 p.m. May 24 matinee.

Tickets are $18 for students and seniors; $20 general admission.

Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster (previously TicketPlus) locations (526-4400) and at the Paliku Theatre (235-7330). Charge by phone at 526-4400.
