BYUH teams go for tennis double

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's men's and women's tennis teams could take making history a step further when they play in the finals of the NCAA Division II Championships at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Last season, BYUH became the first Division II school to win the men's and women's tennis titles in the same season. Yesterday, they put themselves in a position for a repeat.

The BYUH men (29-1) play Hawai'i Pacific (19-3) for the championship tomorrow. BYUH, seeded No. 2, beat No. 5 Barry, Fla., 5-2, and the No. 11 Sea Warriors handed top-seed West Florida its first loss of the season, 5-0, in the semifinals.

BYUH's lone loss was to West Florida on March 31. HPU, national runners-up in 2000 and 2001, suffered all three of its losses to BYUH.

No. 1 BYUH (36-0) will meet No. 3 Barry (25-2) for the women's title, also tomorrow. BYUH defeated previously unbeaten Lynn, Fla., 5-1, while Barry eliminated Georgia College and State University, 5-3.

The Seasiders, who also won the national title in 2000, have won 65 straight and 168 of their last 169 matches. Their loss was to Lynn in the 2001 title match.
