Murder suspect pleads innocent

A 33-year-old man today pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Seawind Surf and Street co-owner Michiko Sakata on April 22.

The trial date for Daiki Iba, a citizen of Japan who is here on a work visa, was scheduled for the week of July 14.

Bond revoked in slaying case

Todd Lokene Lopez, 35, charged with murdering his girlfriend Memory Joy Medina last Nov. 27, surrendered to police yesterday after a Maui-based bail company revoked its surety of the $100,000 bond it posted for his release last month. Police said Lopez failed to meet conditions imposed by the company for the bond.

Lopez was expected to be returned to the O'ahu Community Correctional Center. His trial is expected to start the week of Aug. 11, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Medina was found dead in the bathroom of her home at 94-1054 Awalai St. in Waipahu. She had multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest, police said.

Man charged in airport shooting

A 24-year-old Kapa'a man was charged today in a federal complaint with assaulting a Transportation Security Administration officer Thursday at Lihue Airport on Kaua'i.

The complaint filed by Special Agent Jordan Lowe of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Lloyd P. Albinio "did forcibly assault, intimidate and interfere" with TSA officer Glenn Hing, who was stationed at one of the closed hallways at the airport leading back to the gates from the baggage claim area of Hawaiian Airlines.

Albinio was carrying a Sig Sauer P226 9mm semi-automatic pistol, the complaint said. He pointed the gun at Hing and said, "What you like see if this gun is loaded?" and fired a shot away from Hing to gain entrance to the hallway, the complaint said. Albinio later fired a shot in another location inside the airport.

No one was injured.

Man attacked with tire iron

A 27-year-old man hit three times in the head with a tire iron yesterday at 98-150 Ka'onohi St. was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, police said. They are investigating the 4 a.m. attack as an attempted murder.

The suspect fled the scene in a truck and is at large, police said.

Traffic collision victim identified

The medical examiner's office today identified the man who died Friday at The Queen's Medical Center from injuries suffered in a March 10 traffic collision.

Vincent Martinez, 78, was the driver of a 1991 Toyota Camry that drifted across the center lane on North School Street near Kamehameha IV Road and into the path of a city bus at 8:30 a.m., police said. The bus driver stopped before the collision when he saw the car coming toward him.

There were no passengers on the bus or in the car, and the bus driver was not injured.

It was O'ahu's 32nd traffic fatality of the year.

Beach assault suspect freed

A 17-year-old man arrested yesterday on suspicion of attacking a woman sunbathing at an isolated North Shore beach has been released pending further investigation.

He was booked for attempted murder and kidnapping.

A 28-year-old woman told police a man attacked her from behind at 10:30 a.m. while she was lying face down near Sunset Beach. He allegedly twisted her neck and tried to cover her face with a towel, police said. The sound of an all-terrain vehicle in the area scared him off, police said.

The suspect was found at a nearby bus stop, questioned by police and released at 3:10 p.m.

Fallen utility pole slows Kihei traffic

A section of Maui's Mokulele Highway between Hansen Road and Pi'ilani Highway was closed for more than 18 hours because of a fallen utility pole, which had been struck by a vehicle yesterday at 3:30 p.m.

Traffic to and from Kihei was detoured onto North Kihei Road while the pole was repaired, police said. Mokulele Highway was still closed at 8:30 a.m. today. Maui Electric Co. reported no power loss.
