THE LEFT LANE
For women's health

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Did you know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in Hawai'i? Cancer, diabetes and strokes don't rank too far behind. The chilling facts are part of the reason it's time to take part in National Women's Health Week, going on this week across the country.

Women in Hawai'i are urged to take advantage of free or low-cost checkups today with their own doctors or at the Women's Imaging Center (1285 Waianuenue, Hilo, Hawai'i); Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services (2239 North School St., Honolulu) or the Community Clinic of Maui (48 Lono Avenue, Kahului).

For more, go to www.4woman.gov or call the National Women's Health Information Center at (800) 994-9662.

Hawai'i's fine design

No interior design magazine would be complete without inclusion of a Hawai'i home or two. Check newsstands for the new Western Interiors and Design, a magazine that highlights the best interior design in the West.

The first issue includes a 10-page spread on "Tropical Fusion," an oceanfront mansion in Honolulu designed by architect Peter Vincent. It's called a blend of Hawaiian and Balinese motifs, but if you're not sure what that design lingo means, just think one word: expensive.

Surfer in Vogue

Brace yourself, girls: The latest Hawai'i surfer to hit the modeling pages of Teen Vogue is Danny Fuller, 21, who is in the June-July issue, available tomorrow.

Fuller goes shirtless, sporting a tattoo of his last name above his navel while he walks out of the ocean carrying his surfboard.

"The ocean is a place you can get away from everything. The bigger the wave, the better the feeling," he says.
