Shark attack shuts beaches

Kahalu'u and White Sands beach parks in Kona are closed until further notice after a 20-year-old man suffered leg injuries from a shark bite Saturday in waters north of Kahalu'u beach.

Officials from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources flew over the shoreline yesterday morning in a helicopter from the South Kohala fire station and spotted a 10-foot shark off Kahalu'u, Hawai'i County Fire Department officials said. Both beach parks remained closed yesterday.

The DLNR will conduct further surveillance of the shoreline today.

The Big Island man was attacked around midday Saturday. He suffered multiple cuts and other injuries to his right lower calf down to his heel. He was admitted to Kona Community Hospital and released yesterday. The injuries were described as not serious.

Officials say three to four shark incidents occur every year in Hawai'i. At least six shark attacks were reported last year.
