Grants awarded for UH projects

The University of Hawai'i Women's Campus Club has awarded six grants totaling $14,975 for various projects at UH campuses, including $5,000 for an all-electric kiosk in the Hamilton Library lobby; $2,300 to restore two paintings by local artist Keichi Kimura to be displayed in Sinclair Library; $3,000 for musical instruments and basic costume needs to the Department of Theatre and Dance; $2,475 to replace equipment in the Campus Children's Center; $1,200 to Waikiki Aquarium for marine animal tracking equipment; and $1,000 to Kapi'olani Community College for handouts distributed during the New Student Orientation and Welcome Day last fall.


HOT awarded $20,000

Hawaii Opera Theatre has received a $20,000 grant from the Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation to help finance its education programs.

Makakilo school to get $10,000

The Estate of James Campbell will contribute $10,000 to Makakilo Elementary School for computers.


Cancer society unit gets grant

The Atherton Family Foundation has granted $7,500 to the American Cancer Society East Hawai'i unit to implement the second year of the Ka'u Community Capacity Project to the geographically isolated and medically underserved community.


Literacy council gets $175,000

The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a two-year grant of $175,000 to the Environmental Literacy Council to produce a series of environmental history teaching guides.

The guides, part of a joint project of the Environmental Literacy council and the National Science Teachers Association, is designed to illustrate how fundamental science concepts contribute to an understanding of environmental issues.
