Rainbows' Chang wins 5000 run

The University of Hawai'i's Victoria Chang won the 5000-meter run Saturday night at the Oxy Invitational in Eagle Rock, Calif.

Chang finished in 16 minutes, 48.47 seconds to win by nearly 18 seconds.

UH's Teryn Bentley finished 15th in 19:00.29 and Shane Enright placed 23rd in 20:03.26.

In other events involving UH athletes:

  • Robin McRobbie finished second in the 3000 steeplechase in 11:31.64.
  • Olivia Smoody placed fifth in the high jump with 5-05.00.
  • Hanna Bremler placed sixth in the 1500 in 4:38.07, just eight seconds behind the winner.
  • Novelle Murray finished sixth in the discus with 152-07.00 and 13th in the shot put with 40-04.75.
  • Alexis Fredrick set a UH record in the hammer throw while finishing 24th with 116-05.00 and placed 17th in the discus with 117-09.
  • Nicole Wright set a personal best in the 200 while finishing 10th with a time of 29.02.
  • Diosa Hussey placed 10th in the shot put with 42-08.00.
  • Carolyn Berger (1:05.16) and Kira Lee (1:08.40) each had personal bests in the 400 hurdles while finishing 14th and 18th, respectively.
  • Arwen Militante placed 14th in the javelin with 110-00.00.
  • Amanda Page finished 17th in the shot put with 36-04.25.
  • Jordana Whittington placed 23rd in the 800 in 2:19.01.


SURFING

• Dorian advances: Shane Dorian of Kailua, Kona, advanced to the third round of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday.

Dorian's best two waves scored a total of 16.33 points, while second-round foe Fabio Gouveia of Brazil finished with 10.77.
