Diplomat with a cause

SUGIHARA
A film tribute to World War II Japanese hero Chiune Sugihara has been extended through this month at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.

Sugihara was a Japanese diplomat who defied the orders of his superiors and issued thousands of visas to Polish Jews to save them from the Nazis. After the war, he was dismissed from the Japanese foreign service for disobeying orders. His story went untold for years until a survivor sought him out to thank him in the 1960s.

Showings of the Sugihara documentary "Inochi No Visa (Visas for Life)" are at 1 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays in the first-floor Gallery Theater. Cost is $3 for residents and $5 for nonresidents. Information: 945-7633.

That capital zing

If you love art, history and culture but can't indulge your passion because you're: 1) cheap, or 2) lazy, then Saturday is your lucky day.

The ninth annual A Capital Day Down Capitol Way event offers free trolley rides to designated stops in the downtown capitol district.

The activity starts with an opening ceremony in the Honolulu Hale courtyard at 9 a.m. and continues through 2 p.m. with free guided tours at sites such as the state art museum, the capitol, the police department museum and the Mission Houses Museum.
