Tonight's Must-See

"NYPD Blue," 9 p.m., ABC. Here's a powerhouse episode that has all the elements we expect from "NYPD Blue." It has raw emotions and a brilliant little monologue, perfectly delivered by Dennis Franz. The core has Connie (Charlotte Ross) fighting for child custody. Her biggest obstacle is the fact that she lives with Andy (Franz), whose past includes alcoholism and violence.

Of Note

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. Last week, viewers ousted Joshua Gracin, proving that this really is a talent show and not just a popularity contest. Tonight, the final three — Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and Kimberley Locke — compete for spots in next week's finale.

"Gilmore Girls," 7 p.m., WB. This wraps up the two-parter that could lead to a spin-off series about Jess (Milo Ventimiglia). Tonight, he's in California to get to know his biological dad (Rob Estes).

"Smallville," 8 p.m., WB. This starts the two-part season finale. Clark finally kisses Lana but then faces a new crisis.

"24," 8 p.m., Fox. With only two episodes left, Jack is still trying to prevent a war that may be based on a hoax.

"Frasier," 8 p.m., NBC. Felicity Huffman ("Sports Night") gets the focus tonight. After breaking up with Frasier's accountant, she decides she and Frasier must sneak into the guy's office and retrieve important files. The results are both scary and romantic.

"Watching Ellie," 8:30 p.m., NBC. Ellie gets a job doing a commercial for an alcohol-laced fruit drink that seems to be aimed at teens.

"Dateline," 9 p.m., NBC. Tentatively scheduled is a tribute to Jane Pauley, who's leaving after 27 years with NBC News.

"Judging Amy," 9 p.m., CBS. In the season finale, Amy isn't sure if Stu has just proposed to her.
