EAST HONOLULU

Damage to sign called vandalism

Engineers have determined that cracks in the Hawai'i Kai community identification sign are the result of vandalism and not faulty construction, according to the city's field investigation.

"There was no evidence of grout cracks or ground disturbance at the base of the wall," said Tim Steinberger, director of the city's Department of Design and Construction. Steinberger also said there was broken glass behind the sign and that its concrete sail had been bent.

The city on Thursday sent an engineer to inspect the sign, which was part of a three-sign, $190,000 vision team project. The Hawai'i Kai sign is not yet a year old, but has been plagued with problems from construction delays to faulty positioning.

The city is awaiting an estimate on the cost of the repair and will use leftover money from the original appropriation to cover the work.

Fair, fund-raiser set at Koko Head

Koko Head Elementary School will hold its annual Learning Fair and Outback Steakhouse fund-raiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the school. The public is invited to both.

The Learning Fair will feature students' works of art, literature and science, which will be displayed at the school's library and at the fund-raiser.

Dinner tickets are $7; takeout orders are available. Money raised will be used to pay for an art/music or physical education teacher next year and to finish a technology upgrade begun in 2002.

The restaurant has donated the dinners, so all money raised in ticket sales will go to the school's projects. To buy tickets, call 397-5811.

Work scheduled on Likelike

It's a good week to avoid Likelike Highway.

The state Transportation Department says sections of both lanes will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today through Thursday for repaving.

The closures will be from Valley View Drive to Kulakolea Drive. During the work, contraflow traffic will be implemented on the Kane'ohe-bound Likelike Highway from Valley View Drive to Nalanieha Street.

In addition, parts of the highway will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in several other locations:

  • One lane in both the Honolulu-bound and Kane'ohe-bound directions from Valley Drive to Burmeister Overpass.
  • One lane in the Kane'ohe-bound direction one mile before the tunnel.

Interisland cruise to skip Fanning

A mechanical problem has forced the 2,200-passenger Norwegian Star to skip a scheduled trip to Fanning Island this week.

But Norwegian Cruise Line spokesman Steve Hirano said the problem wasn't serious enough to cancel the cruise, and the ship will continue its tour around the state.

Hirano said a transformer problem affecting the ship's speed and propulsion was discovered yesterday. He said the reduced speed meant the ship could not make the trip to Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati and return to Hawai'i in the three scheduled days. Fanning Island is 600 miles south of Honolulu.

The seven-day cruise left Honolulu Sunday, and Hirano said the Norwegian Star will spend extra time around the Big Island and Maui. He said he believes passengers will receive some sort of compensation, but nothing had been announced as of yesterday.

Homes lose power after three poles hit

About 50 St. Louis Heights homes were without electricity early yesterday morning after a vehicle knocked over three utility poles.

The power failure occurred about 1:30 a.m. when a vehicle hit poles near the intersection of Libert Street and St. Louis Drive. The vehicle knocked down two poles and went on to knock over a third farther down the street, said Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Fred Kobashikawa.

No injuries were reported.

Kobashikawa said power to about 40 customers was out until about 7 a.m.

Electricity to the remaining 10 homes was restored at 1:06 p.m.
