UH-Hilo golfer off to nationals

Nick Mason will represent the University of Hawai'i-Hilo at the NCAA Division II National Golf Championship May 18-24 at the Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Ore.

Mason, a sophomore from Wahiawa, drained a 60-foot putt on the first sudden-death hole to tie for 10th at the West Regional Championship last week and qualify as an individual for the national championship.

SOFTBALL

UH-Hilo players honored: Junior shortstop Nancy Vega was selected the University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team's outstanding player, coach Callen Perreira announced.

Vega had a team-leading .371 batting average and 11 doubles. She also had two home runs and 27 RBIs with a .515 slugging percentage. She struck out only six times while walking 10 times.

Freshman Leo Sing Chow was named outstanding pitcher and rookie of the year. Sing Chow had the Pacific West Conference's lowest ERA at 0.66. She posted a 14-3 record with 70 strikeouts and held opposing batters to a .159 average.

Other honors were given to Tara Martinez (scholar/athlete) and Leinani Hashida (coaches award).

GYMNASTICS

Moniz, Vercruyssen defend titles: Defending champions Matt Moniz and Kira Vercruyssen won the Level 10 senior division trampoline and double mini competition at Saturday's Hawai'i State Tumbling and Trampoline Meet at the Hawai'i Academy's Aloha Gym.

Forty athletes participated in the three components of the sport: trampoline, double-mini trampoline and tumbling.

High scores for level 8 and up were:

Level 10

Keiki division: trampoline, Kelsen Onigama. Junior division: trampoline and double mini, Nani Vercruyssen. Senior division: trampoline and double mini, Matt Moniz (male) and Kira Vercruyssen (female).

Level 9

Keiki division: double mini, Kelsen Onigama. Junior division: tumbling, Nani Vercruyssen. Senior division: trampoline and double mini, Drew McPhillips, and tumbling, Matt Moniz.

Level 8

Keiki division: double mini and trampoline, Rory McPhillips (female) and Spencer Madanay (male), tumbling, Kelsen Onigama.

Junior division: double mini and tumbling, Paige Castillo; trampoline, Keisha Padello. Senior division: double mini, Chelaine Eliazar; trampoline, Tiare Bolongan; tumbling, Drew McPhillips.

FOOTBALL

Ex-49er coach to toss coin: Former San Francisco 49ers coach Bill Walsh will provide the opening coin toss at Friday's arena2football game between the Hawaiian Islanders and the Wichita Stealth.

The game is 7:30 p.m. at Blaisdell Arena. Both teams are 4-2.
