Council delays permit meeting

Plans to build a Pacific Health Center in Waipi'o hit another snag yesterday when the City Council postponed a decision on a permit until the developer can show that a new hospital is needed in the area.

According to city deputy corporation counsel David Tanoue, a state statute forbids the city from issuing any permits until the developer submits a "certificate of need" from the state of Hawai'i Health Planning and Development Agency.

The council's Zoning Committee postponed a decision on the permit for 60 days to give Pacific Health Community Inc. time to apply for the certificate.

Part of the Koa Ridge project, the health center plans call for moving Wahiawa General Hospital to 210 acres near Ka Uka Boulevard and the Waipi'o Costco. Plans also include a sports medicine complex and a biotechnology institute.

Hawaiian Electric spokes-man Chuck Freedman said the board had asked the utility to clear up confusion about pole use and what lines are allowed on a pole.
