The Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championships, dominated by private schools for the past 26 years, suddenly became a public school tournament last night.

All three O'ahu Interscholastic Association teams in yesterday's first round won — including Kahuku's 59-54 victory over defending state champion Kamehameha — and Lahainaluna knocked off Maryknoll of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 53-43. That means seven of tonight's eight quarterfinalists are public school teams, with No. 1 seed Punahou of the ILH being the lone private school squad remaining.

ILH teams have won 22 of the 26 previous state tournaments, including 15 of the past 16.

"It's great to know all the other OIA teams are still in," said Kahuku center Latoya Wily, who led the Red Raiders with 19 points and seven rebounds. "One thing about us OIA teams, we know that against the ILH we have to work extra hard. We've got to work even harder to beat them, because they're usually better."

In last night's feature game that lived up to its big expectations, Kahuku held off the Warriors before 1,081 at the University of Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center despite a spectacular 31-point, four-steal performance by Kamehameha senior Megan Ching.

The Red Raiders (12-2) will play No. 3 seed Konawaena (13-0) at 5 p.m. in today's quarterfinals.

Kahuku, which took third in the OIA, led the ILH runner-up Warriors (12-3) almost the entire game. The Red Raiders used an 11-2 run in the first period to erase a 4-0 deficit and led 14-9 entering the second quarter. Kamehameha closed to 26-24 at the half, but Kahuku began the third period with a 5-0 run to lead 31-24.

Kahuku controlled the boards in the first half, out-rebounding Kamehameha 22-6.

"We knew tonight it was going to be about rebounds," Red Raiders coach Wendy Anae said. "We had to out-rebound them if we wanted to win."

Like most opponents, Kahuku also focused on stopping Ching, but the reigning Advertiser State Player of the Year would not be denied. After a slow start (three points in the first period), Ching scored seven in the second quarter and 10 in the third. She had 11 points in the fourth period, including a 25-foot 3-pointer right before the final horn.

"We tried to stop her, but I think that only gave her more motivation," Anae said.

A 5-foot-8 forward, Ching scored mostly on drives to the basket or short jumpers. She shot 9 of 18 from the field and 12 of 16 from the line, including seven in a row at one point.

"This was her best game all season," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said, "but she had no help."

Kamehameha got only a combined eight points from its four guards, and no other Kamehameha player scored more than seven.

The Warriors took their first lead, at 41-40, since early in the game on Jeneka Taeoali'i's three-point play with 6:40 to play, but the Red Raiders immediately took it back on Aisha Ale's short turnaround jumper and never trailed again. Kamehameha won all three preseason meetings between the teams.

"It's kind of a ripoff, because Kamehameha is one of the top teams in the state, but we got paired together in the first round and now they're out," Anae said.

Kahuku had 19 turnovers in the first half but only four in the second. Ale added 14 points and Karla Tailele contributed 10 points and four assists.

"There's no celebration until it's all over," said Wily. "We gotta want it even more now. This was just one stop along the way."
