Man faces drug, burglary charges

Drug and burglary charges are pending against an 18-year-old Kaka'ako man arrested Tuesday allegedly in possession of property stolen from a Pi'ikoi Street business, police said.

Lt. Mitchell Kiyuna, supervisor of Central Honolulu burglary/theft investigations, said today the suspect is believed to be associated with "more than one other person" in a series of recent burglaries in the Pa'wa'a, Kaka'ako, Ala Moana and Kapi'olani business districts. The small ring may be responsible for 10 to 15 burglaries since late March.

Kiyuna said burglars gained entry to the business by cutting holes through walls, from ceilings or by breaking door knobs.

The suspect was booked on suspicion of second-degree burglary, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Woman dies after collision

A 31-year-old 'Ewa Beach woman died last night at St. Francis Medical Center-West about an hour after she was involved in a head-on collision on Fort Weaver Road near 'A'awa Drive at West Loch Fairways.

The woman was a front-seat passenger in a 1992 Nissan Maxima in the 9 p.m. collision with a 1995 Dodge Neon that had crossed a grass median. Police said the 18-year-old male driver of the Neon was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle,

The woman was pronounced dead at 10:18 p.m. Three others in the Nissan — a man, 33, and two boys, ages 9 and 2 — as well as the driver of the Neon and a 16-year-old male passenger were taken to The Queen's Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be serious, police said.

The medical examiner's office is working on confirming the woman's identity before releasing her name. The traffic fatality is O'ahu's 33rd of the year. There were 26 deaths by the same date in 2002.

Bus hits trucks; students not hurt

No one was seriously injured today in a 9:05 a.m. collision on the H-1 Freeway near the westbound Waipahu off-ramp that involved two pickup trucks and a school bus carrying 34 seventh-grade students from St. John Vianney School in Kailua.

Lee Gomes, general manager of Gomes School Bus Service, said the bus driver could not avoid the collision between the trucks that had just occurred in front of him.

Gomes said the students were transferred to another bus and taken to the Waipahu Cultural Center for their scheduled outing. School officials confirmed that none of the students was injured.

Park worker's generator stolen

Police are looking for a woman who drove off in a blue pickup truck yesterday with a stolen generator, leaving behind her accomplice who was captured by Sunset Memorial Park employees.

The 37-year-old man was booked on suspicion of second-degree robbery. The generator worth $2,750 is owned by an employee of the cemetery and was taken from an open tent on the grounds at 11:30 a.m. Workers saw the man and woman loading it onto the truck and ran over to confront the pair, police said. The woman, however, drove off before they arrived.
