YESTERDAY'S QUARTERFINALS

Farrington 50, Baldwin 43

Kahuku 69, Konawaena 64, 2 OTs

Moanalua 52, Lahainaluna 40

Punahou 69, McKinley 48

TODAY'S SEMIFINALS

Farrington (12-4) vs. Punahou (15-0) 6:30 p.m.

Moanalua (14-0) vs. Kahuku (13-2), 8 p.m.

Less than 24 hours after toppling defending state champion Kamehameha, the Kahuku High School girls basketball team held off No. 3 seed Konawaena, 69-64, in a double-overtime quarterfinal last night at the University of Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center.

The Red Raiders (13-2) will play No. 2 seed Moanalua (14-0) in tonight's feature semifinal at 8. Moanalua, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, advanced with a 52-40 victory over Lahainaluna.

Kahuku lost to Moanalua, 49-44, during the OIA Eastern Division regular season, and the Red Raiders will need to dig down deep to find extra energy again. They did not return to the North Shore until about 11:30 Tuesday night, and after spending the entire day at school, the team hopped on a bus at 2:30 p.m. for the one-hour ride to Manoa yesterday.

Then the Red Raiders had to outlast Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Konawaena (13-1) in 40 intense minutes last night before again making the long trip back home.

"We got off to a slow start," said Kahuku center Latoya Wily, who finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. "But every game we're gonna do our best, and as long as we stick together we'll be OK."

For the second straight night, the Red Raiders had to overcome a spectacular scoring exhibition by an opposing forward. Tuesday it was Kamehameha's Megan Ching, who scored a season-high 31 points, and last night it was Jessica Hanato, who scored 27 before fouling out with 41 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Konawaena's All-State junior center, Nancy Hoist, added 23 points, six rebounds and six steals. But Wily made two layups to start the second overtime, and Artevia Wily sank 4 of 4 free throws in the final 1:12 to seal it.

"Every night, it's been crazy for us," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said. "I didn't see Konawaena this year but I saw them last year and knew they'd be tough even though they're kinda young (only three seniors)."

The Wildcats built a 24-11 lead midway through the second period, but the Red Raiders ended the half with an 8-2 run to enter the locker room down 30-25. Kahuku then used a 16-1 run overlapping the third and fourth quarters to go up 45-36 with 7:14 left in regulation.

Hanato, who scored 16 points in the first half, was held to four in the third period and picked up her fourth foul with 1:13 remaining in the quarter.

"They chipped away at our lead and then we started hanging our heads," Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa said. "We pride ourselves on defense, but Latoya was such a big factor. We tried to front her, then get help on the backside, but she's so strong in there."

The Red Raiders led 53-43 after Mona Ale's free throw with 4:22 left, but Hoist and Hanato sparked the Wildcats to a 12-2 run to send it into overtime. Hoist sank 9 of 9 free throws in the fourth period, and Keala Kaupu's layup with 20 seconds remaining tied the score at 55.

Each team scored four points in the first overtime, but Konawaena lost Hanato with 41 seconds left and Hoist had already been playing with four fouls since 4:53 left in regulation.

"You can't ask for a better game," said Awa, whose team lost to state runner-up Punahou in last year's quarterfinals. "We're always playing for respect, so we want these challenges."
