Robb rides perfect wave to quarterfinals

Advertiser Staff

Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore scored a perfect 10 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday.

The fourth round of the contest was completed in barreling waves of 4 to 6 feet at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Robb and Shane Dorian of Kailua, Kona, were the only Hawai'i surfers to advance. World champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i was eliminated, as was wildcard entry Conan Hayes from Kailua, Kona.

Robb's last wave offered a long barrel ride, and he made it out successfully for a perfect 10. His two-wave total of 18.93 was enough to edge former world champion C.J. Hobgood's 17.54.

"I guess 10s are usually the ones you don't think you're going to make," Robb said. "I was so deep when I took off. I just kept going and never gave up."

Dorian advanced by defeating Hayes, 16.87-12.83.

Irons was eliminated by Florida's Cory Lopez, 19.1-14.6. Irons scored a 9.6 early in the heat, but then broke his board during a wipeout and never got a high-scoring second wave.

Despite being eliminated, Irons remains the No. 1-ranked surfer on the World Championship Tour.

WINTER SPORTS

Snowmobile honors: Glenn Clark Jr. has earned a rare double — honors in yacht racing in the Pacific Ocean and in snowmobiling in New Hampshire.

As a Hawai'i resident he won three state sailing championships with the Kane'ohe Yacht Club in the 1970s and '80s and served as Commodore of the Hawai'i Yacht Racing Association.

Now, as a resident of Moultonbor, N.H., the 75-year-old retired operating manager of Hawai'i Stevedores, has been named the New Hampshire "snowmobiler of the year."

Clark was honored at the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association annual meeting this month for his many contributions to the sport and the association, said Dana Cabana, the NHSA president.

Clark has been a major organizer and charity fund-raiser for the sport as past president of the Moultonbor Snowmobile Club, Cabana said.
