Rainbow Wahine defeat Northwestern

AUSTIN, Texas ­ Trisha Ramos hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning today to lift Hawaii to a 1-0 victory over Northwestern in an elimination game in the NCAA softball regionals.

The Rainbow Wahine (39-19) will face Arizona State (32-24) on Saturday.

Ramos drove home Stacey Porter, who had doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch by Lauren Schwendimann.

Hawaii pitcher Melissa Coogan (31-10) threw her 32nd complete-game and 14th shutout of the season. She scattered nine hits, while walking three and striking out one.

Schwendimann (10-8) also went the distance for the Wildcats (36-19). She threw six strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and two walks.

Northwestern (36-19) left 11 runners on bases, while Hawaii left nine.

The winner of the eight-team Region 3 tournament, will join the winners of the seven other regionals in the Women's College World Series.
