Kono takes 1-shot lead in Jennie K. golf tourney

Punahou seventh grader Stephanie Kono shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to take the first-round lead in the Jennie K. Wilson Invitational, at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Kono is one ahead of Waiakea sophomore Amanda Wilson and two-time Jennie K. champion Bobbi Kokx. Lehua Wise, runner-up in last week's girls state high school championship, is fourth at 75.

Kono won the 2001 state match play championship at the age of 11. She was second in the state stroke play championship last year.

The second round tees off at 7 this morning, as does tomorrow's final round. The leaders are expected to start at 9 a.m. tomorrow.



TRACK AND FIELD

• McRobbie seventh: Hawai'i's Robin McRobbie finished seventh in the 3000-meter women's steeplechase at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships yesterday at Texas-El Paso's Kidd Field.

McRobbie, a junior from Ottawa, Ontario, finished in 11 minutes, 39.64 seconds. Kara June of Fresno State won in 10:50.12.

Nevada leads the meet with 85 points, followed by Rice (42.5), Louisiana Tech (35), Fresno State (32) and Southern Methodist (29). Hawai'i is ninth and last with three points.

The meet ends today with finals in 14 women's events.

WEIGHTLIFTING

• Matsui sixth: Chani Matsui, a 16-year-old Kamehameha Schools sophomore finished sixth in the 106-pound class Friday in the National Weightlifting Championships at Chattanooga, Tenn.

The winner was the 2000 Olympic champion Tara Nott.

Matsui will enter the 2003 National Schoolage Championship in June at Essex Junction, Vt.
