Big Island blaze damages homes

Big Island firefighters today were battling a 400-acre brush fire in South Kohala that led to the temporary evacuation of nearly 50 homes in Waikoloa Village.

"No homes have been destroyed, first of all, and no one has been injured," said Big Island Mayor Harry Kim. "But there are two homes that may have suffered some heavy smoke (damage), as well as charring of some of the outside area."

By 4:40 p.m., fire crews contained the fire and residents were allowed to return to their homes. As a result of the precautionary evacuation, the American Red Cross established an evacuation center at Waikoloa Stables.

Fire personnel were expected to remain at the scene last night to continue operations, a Hawai'i County Fire Department official said.

Officials received the alarm shortly after 10 a.m. Six county and three volunteer companies responded to the fire.

A military company from the Pohakuloa Training Area also assisted, as well as three helicopters and three bulldozers.

Crews conducted fire breaks and water drops to battle the blaze, Kim said.

"We do not know what the cause is at this time," Kim said.
