Puna man, 18, killed in wreck
An 18-year-old Puna man died yesterday in a two-car crash on the Kea'au-Pahoa Highway, Route 130 in Keaau on the Big Island. Police said Sunny Kang of Kurtistown lost control of his south-bound Acura while changing lanes. Kang collided with a north-bound Nissan pickup truck.
Police received the 911 call at 11:36 a.m. Kang died at the Hilo Medical Center at 12:26 p.m. The driver and passenger of the truck Hawaiian Beaches residents Tadeo and Rosalia Santiago, 82 and 79, were taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Maui childcare center to open
WAILUKU, Maui The Kahi Kamali'i childcare center for low-income families is expected to open next month at the Cameron Center in Wailuku. The 4,272-square-foot facility will provide care for 40 infants and toddlers, and will be operated by the federal Head Start program, administered locally by Maui Economic Opportunity Inc.
The $1.1 million in construction costs was paid for by government and private grants and donations. A blessing for Kahi Kamali'i was held recently to commemorate the Cameron Center's 30th anniversary.
